Hospices are now big businesses for private equity firms, raising concerns about end-of-life care

Hospice facilities have traditionally operated as nonprofit organizations, but there has been a sharp rise in private equity (PE) firms and publicly traded corporations (PTC) acquiring hospice facilities in the past decade. A study led by Dr. Robert Tyler Braun, assistant professor of population health sciences, investigated hospice acquisitions by PE firms and PTC from 2011 to 2019. He and his colleagues found the number of privately-owned hospice facilities increased from 1.9% in 2011 to 7.3% in 2019. During that period, 72% of facilities acquired by PE firms were initially nonprofits. Learn more about how investment companies are transforming the hospice care industry here.
