Physician Altruism, Health Care Spending, and Hospital Admissions

In a first-of-its-kind study published in JAMA Health ForumDr. Lawrence Casalino, senior advisor at the Center, and colleagues investigated the relationship between physician altruism, health care quality, and medical spending. The study found that patients of altruistic physicians were less likely to experience avoidable hospitalizations or emergency department visits, and had lower overall health care spending.

The study was also featured in an article in Healio.
